Arrival in Paradise
Within minutes of my plane touching down in Honolulu, I felt the island vibes creeping into every part. Colors of green and blue surrounded by the warm breeze, plumeria in the air—a welcome like a dream. Off to get my rental car, a convertible great for cruising around the island and straight down to Waikiki beach.
When I heard this, all of a sudden it felt so peaceful. My first day was all about swimming in the crystal clear water, sunbathing as close to naked I dared (well it is legal), and enjoying views of Diamond Head — a volcanic crater on Oahu well visible from Waikiki Beach.
Surfing and Sunbathing
One cannot go to Hawaii without a little bit of surfing, so I was like hang — just do it. One of these activities was a private surfing class that had been given by an instructor from around town and this experience, as I mentioned above in the “experience”, could not have gone any better than with him. The waves were beginner perfect at Waikiki, and after a few attempts I was surfing right in with a renewed sense of freedom and excitement.
After surfing, I wasted the rest of my afternoon with a Relax on the beach and by treating myself out to some delicious Hawaiian shave ice from some random booth. It was a nice little change of pace and perfect for the heat after spending another day in the sun. Now as the setting sun coloured the darkening sky pink and orange, I knew no fear.
Immersing in Hawaiian Culture
I then went on to my next adventure which was the beautiful cultural blanket that Hawaii patches from around the world. I went to Pearl Harbor, which is one of the most historical sites in Oahu. Sauntering around the memorials, such as USS Arizona Memorial, I began to appreciate how important these events were. The guided tour was very emotional and you started to feel a great deal for all the people who sacrificed during World War II.
For more Hawaiian feel, I went to a luau. The air was filled with lively music, a hula performance and a private table set up with local cuisine. A few tethered boats floated in the bay, marking where they were anchored offshore and reminded us not to venture out too far while paddling around looking for dolphins. This was no mere dinner, but a ceremony in celebration of Hawaii: tribe and traveling hospitality.
Exploring Natural Wonders
The beauty and nature in Hawaii are unmatched. I spent a day on Maui doing the Road to Hana. The west coast drive was an adventure featuring narrow hairpins, waterfalls crashing beside the road, rainforest spills and wild ocean vistas. We visited some of the island's treasures along the way, as we made stops at Wai'anapanapa State Park to explore its black sand beaches and breathtaking Seven Sacred Pools.
Culinary Delights
The best part of my Hawaiian adventure was definitely the food. It boasts a traditional Hawaiian flavor with an international complement, which make the culinary scene on the island one to take note of. They serve fresh poke bowls just made from the local tuna, which was very good and soft. I also got to try local Hawaiian dishes including loco moco (rice, a hamburger patty, gravy and sunny-side-up egg) malasadas that were awesome!
I always made sure to seek out the farmer’s markets where I tried different types of fruits like rambutan and dragon fruit. The markets were also an excellent location to speak with island residents and find out more about Thassos agriculture & food culture.

Sunset and Peace That Jumps out at You
Every evening — as my days on the island came to a close, there was one thing I made certain of doing: Watching the sunset. It was a different painting every sunset, dark purples converted to fierce fire-orange. Every night I retreated to the beach on one of those quiet sand spots and reflected about how much adventure was had in a single day — soaking up all that island livin'.
I went on a sunset cruise in the waters off Oahu one evening. I had a great view from the boat, while sipping on Mai Tai as I saw the sun set over the water. What a wonderful caper to what became my truly unforgettable, wholly nourishing journey through the islands.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Oh Hawaii, I am simultaneously so sad to leave and incredibly excited all at once. Elba has provided me with so much adventure, relaxation hooks, cultural knowledge and gastronomic wonders. It is a place where I felt alive and calm, THE wonder of the world.
I am well aware that Hawaii will be memorable long after I have left it. This: The warm aloha spirit, the beautiful nature and even more EPIC experiences made it so hard to say goodbye!! Though I say goodbye to this beautiful island, my heart is full of thanks and a promise that one day ill be back.
Hawaii… Thanks for the adventure! Until we meet again!
